Surviving a global event requires careful planning and preparation. Everyone remembers when COVID-19 or some other natural disaster hit and devastated a town, state, or even, the global community. The best defense against the fear and panic that these events bring is preparation.

For me, when COVID-19 hit the US, I was completely unprepared. The disruption to the supply chain, looting at stores, and the crazy lack of everyday items like water and toilet paper was completely mind-boggling. As a Dad of three kids, I promised myself that I would never be in that position again. That said, let’s get to the list of 39 essential items you need to survive the next global event.

What Are the 39 Essential Items?

These essential items are things that I put together based on my background and training as a military veteran and my family’s experience during COVID. These items make up a “kit” that are typically called many things but mean essentially the same thing:

  • disaster supplies kit
  • survival kit
  • emergency supplies

Whatever name you choose, these basic items are the essential things to make sure that my family (and yours!) is prepared and survives another global event, no matter what it might be.

These items are the same ones that special forces folks keep ready all the time. So why should you? As the saying goes, better to have and not need, than need and not have.

1. Water

Water is the most crucial element for survival in any crisis. Dehydration can set in rapidly and lead to severe health issues. A person can live for only 3 days without water before things start shutting down and presenting a life-threatening situation.

Plus, water is essential for cooking, sanitation, and first aid. During natural disasters or emergencies, clean water sources may be severely compromised making adequate preparation and storage of water even more important.

2. Non-Perishable Food.

During emergencies, access to fresh food may become limited or impossible. This makes these non-perishable items a must-have:

These foods have a long shelf life and can provide a vital safety net including the necessary nutrition and energy to survive. Best to have enough on hand to last each person several days, if not weeks.

3. Manual Can Opener.

A manual can opener, think GI can opener, is a simple yet indispensable tool for survival during a crisis. It makes getting into canned goods easy and will ensure your canned goods are readily available during times of crisis when other cooking or food preparation methods may not be feasible.

4. First Aid Kit.

In emergency situations, injuries and medical issues will occur, and access to professional medical care will likely be limited.

A well-equipped first aid kit will enable you to treat injuries promptly, reducing the risk of infections and complications, and potentially saving your life, not to mention being able to help loved ones and community members.

5. Medications

Maintaining a supply of necessary medications with clear instructions is crucial. It’s especially critical for anyone with conditions like diabetes, asthma, or heart disease. Even common over-the-counter medications, like pain relievers, allergy meds, antibiotic ointment, can be vital for alleviating symptoms and managing minor health issues that will arise during a crisis.

6. Flashlights and Extra Batteries.

If you’ve ever had the power go out, you already know that a flashlight is important and allows you to get around without bumping around, avoiding unnecessary injury and finding things quickly. And, without extra batteries, if the light goes out…well, ‘nuff said.

A good flashlight can also be invaluable for signaling. A cache of batteries (of various types) ensures adequate power for other critical stuff like emergency radios and communications devices.

7. Multi-Tool or Swiss Army Knife.

A multi-tool combines various tools like knives, pliers, screwdrivers, and can openers into one compact device. It can be used for a wide range of tasks, from building shelter and preparing food to conducting repairs and even self-defense. A multi-tool can be a game-changer given its portability and functionality and make it a must-have in any emergency kit.

8. Fire-Starting Tools.

A fire-starting tool is a crucial element and serves multiple critical purposes:

  • Warmth
  • Cooking food
  • Purifying water
  • Signaling for help

In adverse conditions, the ability to start a fire can be life-saving, by maintaining body temperatures and keeping hypothermia at bay. Having a reliable fire-starting tool, such as waterproof matches, a flint and steel set, or a fire starter rod, will enable you to get a fire going in various environments.

9. Warm Clothing and Blankets.

Warm clothes and blankets are vital in cold or extreme weather conditions. Layered clothing, thermal wear, and waterproof outer layers can help protect against the elements and prevent hypothermia. Blankets provide an additional layer for warmth and can be used as makeshift shelter or bedding.

10. Shelter.

Like food and water, shelter is a fundamental requirement for surviving a crisis. Having these items can be the difference between life and death:

  • Tents
  • Tarps
  • Emergency blankets

They provide protection from the elements, offering a secure and dry place to rest. Tents are particularly effective for longer-term shelter needs, while tarps and emergency blankets are versatile and can be used for emergency cover or expedient shelter.

11. Portable Generator or Solar Charger.

A portable generator or solar charger provides you the ability to charge essential communication devices, power small appliances, or even possibly medical equipment. They can also ensure that you can keep power going to your refrigerator or freezer avoiding the hassle (and expense!) of your food spoiling.

Solar chargers would be particularly important if the grid goes down and you need a sustainable and renewable power source. Both of these will increase your resilience and self-sufficiency when access to conventional power is limited or not available at all.

12. Portable Radio or Communication Device.

A portable emergency or hand cranked radio or communication device allows you to receive crucial updates, emergency broadcasts, and stay informed about the evolving situation. Plus, these devices–think satellite phones or CB radios–are an alternative method of calling for assistance or signaling for help should things really go south. Also, having these devices is the linchpin for you to develop a solid crisis communications plan.

13. Personal Hygiene Items.

Personal hygiene items are commonly overlooked but are crucial for maintaining physical health and well-being during a crisis. Items like soap, toothbrushes, and sanitary supplies help maintain personal hygiene, reduce the risk of infection, and prevent disease. Being able to maintain one’s personal hygiene during a crisis also has the added benefit of protecting your mental and emotional well-being.

14. Dust Masks.

Dust masks are a crucial item, particularly for situations involving environmental hazards or airborne contaminants. You will certainly want to have the ability to protect your lungs and reduce the risk of respiratory ailments, in the moment or future. They are lightweight, compact, easy to carry, and deploy when needed.

15. N95 Respirator Masks.

As you may remember, N95 respirator masks were all the rage at the being of the COVID crisis, and within days, you couldn’t get them…anywhere. As we all heard many times during 2020, these masks are very efficient at particle filtration, blocking out at least 95% of particles as small as 0.3 microns, meaning viruses. That kind of filtration and snug fit to your face make them the best choice and why they are widely used among those in healthcare and first responders.

16. Personal Identification and Important Documents.

The need for physical and digital copies of personal identification and important documents makes obvious sense. These include:

  • IDs
  • Passports
  • Birth certificates
  • Insurance policies
  • Medical records
  • Financial information

You’ll want to keep them in a secure, easily accessible location, preferably in a waterproof container.

In the aftermath of a disaster or emergency, you’ll need access to these documents to streamline the recovery processes, such as seeking medical care, claiming insurance, or reestablishing your identity.

Should the crisis become severe requiring you to evacuate, relocate to a shelter, or pass through checkpoints, you’ll need to show proof of identity and residence. Authorities will also use these documents to reunite you with family members in the event of separation.

17. Money.

Cash is king especially when ATMs, credit card systems, or online banking become inaccessible due to power outages or system failures. It’ll give you flexibility and immediate access to essential goods and services. In emergencies, you may need to purchase food, water, transportation, or lodging, and having physical currency ensures you can do that.

During disasters or evacuations, you’ll be able to use cash to get necessary supplies when traditional payment methods are not or can’t be accepted. And if you bug out to a remote area, I doubt you’ll get very far with American Express.

18. Maps of the Local Area.

Maps of the local area provide essential information about your surroundings and nearby resources such as hospitals, shelters, and water sources. When modern navigation systems and GPS fail, local maps are your best bet. You’ll also be able to plan escape routes, make informed decisions, avoid dangerous areas, and coordinate efforts during natural disasters or other emergencies.

19. Extra Clothing and Sturdy Footwear.

Extra clothing and sturdy footwear not only help to protect you against the elements but also will be crucial for keeping you dry and warm. Sturdy footwear, like hiking boots, will enable you to navigate rough terrain, avoid injuries, and provide ankle support. In a crisis, preventing injuries becomes even more critical. These items can significantly contribute to your comfort, mobility, and overall survival.

20. A Whistle.

A whistle can be heard over long distances and is a highly effective way to attract attention when verbal communication is impossible or unsafe. Whether you’re lost, injured, or need to signal for help during an emergency, a whistle’s piercing sound can cut through noise and alert others to your presence. A whistle is lightweight, easy to carry, and enhances your chances of being rescued or assisted in a crisis when the need arises. It sure helped Rose after the sinking of the Titanic!

21. Duct Tape and Zip Ties.

Duct tape and zip ties are invaluable and versatile tools. Duct tape is incredibly versatile, serving as a quick fix for repairing clothing, sealing leaks, and even aiding in creating improvised shelters. Plus, in a pinch, duct tape is handy when trying to start a fire..

Zip ties offer strong, secure fastening capabilities, useful for creating makeshift restraints, constructing temporary fences, securing tarps to trees for shelter, or organizing gear. Their durability and adaptability make them essential additions to any survival kit. Duct tape and zip ties can prove indispensable for quick, on-the-fly solutions for an array of challenges you might face during a crisis.

22. Rope or Paracord.

The versatility of rope and paracord in crisis situations cannot be overstated. With the strength to support various tasks, from building shelters and securing food to crafting tools and rescue operations, rope proves indispensable.

Paracord is compact and has multiple inner strands that can be used individually for various purposes. Whether for making first-aid splints, navigating difficult terrains, or fashioning traps for food, the usefulness of rope and paracord is paramount in the quest for survival.

23. Water Purification Supplies.

Water purification supplies are critical as access to clean and safe drinking water is compromised and the risk of waterborne diseases is high. Water filters, purification tablets, or portable water purifiers enable you to convert potentially contaminated water sources into potable (drinkable) water. These supplies help ensure you have a reliable source of hydration, reduce the risk of illness, and will be a life-saving resource when traditional water sources are disrupted.

24. Mess Kit.

A mess kit is a compact and portable kit that typically includes utensils, plates, and cookware, allowing you to prepare, cook, and eat stored or foraged food efficiently. Designed to be durable and lightweight, mess kits are convenient for both cooking and eating meals. Having a mess kit also encourages proper food handling and hygiene, reducing the risk of foodborne illnesses.

25. Compass or GPS.

A compass or GPS device is invaluable for navigation and orientation. In disaster scenarios, landmarks may change or visibility is limited, making the possibility of getting lost or disoriented highly probable. A compass is a simple, reliable tool that doesn’t rely on power sources, making it a practical option for determining direction.

GPS devices offer precise location data and mapping, aiding in route planning and helping you reach safety more efficiently. But, don’t forget those extra batteries!

26. Sleeping Bags and Sleeping Pads.

Sleeping bags and sleeping pads are essential for situations where shelter and comfort are compromised. Sleeping bags provide insulation and warmth, crucial for maintaining your body temperature in cold weather or outdoor settings. They also protect you against wind and moisture, ensuring a more restful sleep.

Sleeping pads offer both cushioning and insulation from the ground, preventing heat loss. In crisis scenarios, quality rest is crucial for maintaining your physical and mental well-being and will increase your overall resilience during emergencies.

27. Gloves.

Gloves are indispensable and serve multiple critical purposes. They protect your hands from injuries, especially when engaging in tasks like handling debris, building a shelter, cooking, or providing first aid. In cold weather, gloves help prevent frostbite and maintain hand dexterity.

Overall, gloves act as a barrier against contamination, reducing the risk of infection when dealing with unsanitary conditions or medical emergencies and safeguarding your hands from injury and contamination.

28. Food Storage Containers.

Food storage containers help you manage and preserve food resources efficiently, keep food safe from contamination and pests, and extend its shelf life. Having a stockpile of non-perishable items stored in these containers ensures you have a consistent food supply.

Plus food storage containers aid in portion control, reducing food wastage and ensuring you’ll have enough food for an extended period. They also make meal preparation and distribution more convenient.

29. Towels and Washcloths.

Towels and washcloths are often overlooked as essential items but certainly play a pivotal role in personal hygiene, allowing you to maintain cleanliness even when water access is limited.

These items can also serve multiple purposes:

  • Makeshift bandages,
  • Insulating clothing
  • Signaling devices when needed

Having towels and washcloths in your emergency kit is a simple yet crucial preparedness step.

30. Sewing Kit.

A sewing kit is a practical item that enables you to repair clothing, gear, and shelter materials, ensuring your resources last longer and remain functional. In emergency situations, the ability to mend tears, replace buttons, or reinforce materials will be invaluable. Additionally, you can use a sewing kit for first-aid purposes, such as stitching wounds in the absence of medical supplies.

31. Extra Key for your Home and Vehicles.

In emergency situations, such as evacuations or loss of access, spare keys are a must-have for reentering your home, accessing your vehicle, or securing your belongings. They provide peace of mind and flexibility in rapidly changing circumstances.

Losing access to your home or transportation during a crisis would be devastating and severely impact your ability to survive and adapt. Spare keys ensure that you will maintain control over your home and maintain your mobility, preventing unnecessary challenges or delays during emergencies.

32. Entertainment Items.

Entertainment items may not be considered survival essentials, but they play a crucial role in maintaining mental well-being during a crisis. Boredom, anxiety, and isolation will take a toll on your mental health.

Books, games, puzzles, or music will offer you a much-needed distraction, reduce stress, and provide a measure of comfort. Even something as simple as a deck of playing cards can help to break up the monotony, providing you with a bit of a mental break and keeping your morale from breaking down.

33. Garbage Bags.

Garbage bags are a versatile resource for surviving a crisis. They can serve various essential purposes, such as waste disposal, sanitation, and protection against the elements (poor man’s poncho!). Keeping your immediate environment clean is critical for preventing disease, not to mention animals and other critters.

Garbage bags can also be repurposed as waterproof coverings for a shelter, improvised shelter themselves, or even as makeshift ponchos in adverse weather conditions. Their durability and multiple uses make them a valuable addition to your emergency kit.

34. Personal Protection Items.

Personal protection items are essential during any crisis, especially when safety and security are compromised, such as:

  • Self-defense tools (i.e. knives, rifles, pistols, etc),
  • Pepper spray or bear spray
  • Protective gear like helmets and body armor, depending on the severity of the situation

They offer you a means to deter or defend against potential threats, especially since law enforcement response will be delayed, making self-protection crucial.

35. Backpacks or Bug Out Bags.

Backpacks or bug-out bags are indispensable as they provide you with swift and efficient mobility and a means to organize and carry essential items for a quick evacuation or emergency. These bags typically hold a variety of survival essentials, including:

  • Food
  • Water
  • Clothing
  • Money
  • First aid supplies,
  • Communication gear
  • Personal defense items
  • Various tools

Their portability allows for quick and easy access to critical resources when you have to “bug out”.

Always be ready to bug out!

A well-prepared bug-out bag ensures you have the necessities to sustain yourself for an extended period. Backpacks are designed for comfort and mobility when navigating difficult terrains or changing locations.

36. Solar-Powered or Hand-Crank Devices.

Solar-powered or hand-crank devices are critical tools when access to electricity is disrupted or non-existent. Solar chargers, flashlights, radios, and power banks, offer a sustainable and renewable source of energy, keeping your essential communication and navigation tools charged and operational.

Should you forget to pack your batteries, hand-crank radios and power sources can provide a reliable source of power, making them indispensable for sustaining your critical devices like radios and flashlights.

37. Waterproof and Airtight Storage Containers.

Waterproof and airtight storage containers protect your critical supplies from moisture, pests, and environmental factors. They are ideal for storing your food, clothing, important documents, and sensitive equipment.

Also, they prevent water damage and your food from spoiling, protecting your resources and your stomach. Airtight storage helps preserve the freshness and shelf life of stored items and is a valuable tool for securing and organizing your supplies and preventing contamination.

38. Sanitizing Supplies.

Sanitizing supplies helps maintain hygiene, reduce the risk of infection, and prevent the spread of diseases. Items like soap, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and bleach are key to ensuring safe food preparation and personal cleanliness. Sanitizing supplies plays a critical role in keeping hands and surfaces clean as well as first aid and wound care, minimizing the risk of secondary infections.

39. Local Area Information.

Local area information provides knowledge about nearby resources, hazards, and escape routes. This information includes:

  • Maps
  • Emergency contact numbers

Also, detail about and locations of:

  • Shelters
  • Medical facilities
  • Local authorities

It enables you to make informed decisions and access necessary help quickly.

Knowing the geography, terrain and specific risks of your area is essential for preparing for natural disasters and other emergencies. Local area information also aids in communication and coordination with neighbors or community response efforts. In a crisis, where immediate actions can save your and others’ lives, “knowing your backyard” is an absolute must.
